Early last year I shared some information about the people working for me, so I believe this is a nice time for an update, given that the set of people working with me is expanding!
Ditte Bjerregaard is the director of the Center for Violence Prevention in Denmark. Her work, both in her organization and as a PhD student, focuses on femicide. Our project wants to support and use the observation that femicide is a phenomenon that is substantially different from regular homicide. Given its special characteristics, it makes it something that could in principle be more easily prevented. We are taking a data science perspective on it, hoping that it will be useful in the future.
Aske Meineche is an industrial PhD student, who shares his time between ITU with me and the Environmental Protection Agency in Denmark. His PhD project is co-funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. We are focusing on the development of machine learning techniques to aid the process of investigating environmental crimes. We are looking both at domestic environmental crimes (via satellite images) as well as international one (via examining suspicious containers for contraband hazardous waste).
As for my teammates from the previous post, I am happy to report that Lasse has successfully completed his master defense and it was brilliant, Anders has submitted his first paper on a well-performing system forecasting sickness absences, and Nikos and I are working on a super promising paper on a very novel backboning approach that we hope will be ready for ICDE 2027.
